About this artwork

It is plain from this young woman's clothes and jewellery that she belonged to Bruges' wealthy bourgeoisie. Memling painted the portrait of a contemporary and not that of a classical literary figure the Sibylla Sambetha as the inscription suggests. The disfiguring cartouche was inserted in the first half of the 16th century as was the text on the streamer at the bottom of the frame.
