About the collection

Our museum is called vzw Bakery Museum Walter Plaetinck Zuidgasthuishoeve. A whole mouthful! But with this long name you can trace our history!

The history of the Bakery Museum starts sometime in the 70s of the last century. During that period, Walter Plaetinck created his private collection of old bakery material. Through his job as a sales representative for the Puratos company that sells bakery ingredients, he came into contact with many bakers. Through these bakers he received a lot of old bakery machines and tools.

In the mid-1980s, Walter Plaetinck was looking for a home to exhibit his collection. He found a home port in the former Zuidgasthuishoeve in Veurne. This farm site was in the hands of a number of idealists who were looking for a destination for the historic buildings.

This gave rise to the idea of accommodating a Bakery Museum. On July 25, 1985 the time had finally come: the museum opened its doors for the first time!

Since then, the museum has come a long way. Today we continue the work of the idealists. The Bakery Museum is now and tomorrow set up as a treasure keeper for the national bakery heritage.
